Organosilicones and the environment

LeaEcotoxicological effects have been demonstrated for a number of surfactants or their metabolites, such as the nonylphenol ethoxylates, and there is a necessity to find more environmentally acceptable alternatives. Silicone surfactants are used as additives in agricultural formulations but are currently not considered to be of great concern.

A PhD study used atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation and electrospray mass spectrometric techniques for the analysis of organosilicone surfactants and their breakdown products, and to follow the degradation process in different matrices.
